Dr. Jazini Performs First Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery Utilizing Augmented Reality in Virginia-DC Region

BREAKING NEWS – RESTON, VA – October 14, 2020 – Virginia Spine Institute’s Dr. Jazini makes history as the first spine surgeon to perform a minimally invasive spine surgery utilizing augmented reality (AR) in the Virginia-DC Metro area, and first in the world. The 2 centimeter incision using AR minimizes the fear of a long and painful recovery for the patient. The surgery was performed at Reston Hospital Center (HCA Virginia Health System) on October 14, 2020.

Augmented reality shows a GPS-like view of the patient’s spine, which essentially provides Dr. Jazini an extra set of technologically advanced eyes to increase visibility and success of surgery. The AR “Xvision”system, made by Augmedics, makes it possible for surgeons to visualize a patient’s 3D spinal anatomy during surgery – almost like they have ‘x-ray vision.’ This groundbreaking new technology is the first application of augmented reality in minimally invasive surgery and has the potential to streamline and partner several technologies in the operating room, giving surgeons better control and making procedures easier, safer, faster and less invasive.

This is a giant leap ahead in the word of spine surgery and recovery for patients, and an incredible achievement for Dr. Jazini. If you have questions or are interested in minimally invasive surgeries for your neck or back injury, schedule a consultation with one of our spine surgeons.
